What is the difference between a hornpipe and a reel

May, pm Hey David, thanks for the feedback. I was wondering if you could give me a good example of a player who has more of a rhythmic, dance style of hornpipe and jig playing? Skyblue, I don't know that you have to listen to a specific mando player to get a sense of the rhythm of these types of tunes, just listen to the genre.

There are gazillions of great Irish Traditional recordings out there. Starting with fiddlers as John has suggested, is great. They all play with wonderful variation on the the pulse of this music although I would suggest that Winnie Horan's fiddling with the group Solas is a little more superfast-modern Irish. Other artists to consider: 1.

Kevin Burke fiddle 2. DeDanaan, although they tend to play hornpipes close to reels, either that or Frankie Gavin fiddle and flute plays with a fair bit of swing.

Brian Conway Sligo Fiddle 4. Danu, I think that they're just plain fun. Matt Molloy flute and Sean Keane fiddle from the Cheiftans. I think there are some nice hornpipes on that one. Nice selection of reels and hornpipes on his first and second albums.

And it goes on Best, Mike. The ones I would recommend to listen to would be fiddle players, particularly Martin Hayes and Tommy Peoples, Aly Bain is also good and doesn't play everything as fast as possible like some fiddlers do. Not many but they do exist. Yes, the East Wind album is excellent! Originally Posted by Klaus Wutscher May 02 , Is "Blackberry Blossom" considered a hornpipe? Chris Thile plays it at Warp 11 but it is such a good tune that it survives slowing down and swinging it a little. Try it, you will like it. Page 1 of 2 1 2 Last Jump to page:. The words pronounced or the tune heard is divided into three parts like jig-i-ty I jig-i-ty I. The main emphasis is on the first and fourth beats. On paper, the tune always starts with a clef, and one can find the numbers two and three for a jig.

A reel is the first dance form taught to any beginner student learning Irish dances. It is considered less graceful and less smooth than a single jig and light jig. A reel is influenced by the dances of Scotland, and it is the most common tune played and most common dance form in traditional Irish music. Each bar has four beats I I. The emphasis is on the first and third beat like dum-dum-dum-dum I dum-dum-dum-dum I. On paper, the tune starts with a clef, and the two numbers one can identify the reel with are six and eight.

A jig and a reel are two different dance forms with two different music compositions associated with each other. Jigs are of many types like: heavy jig, light jig, hop jig, slip jig, triple jig; a reel has no types.

A jig is considered more elegant and graceful than a reel. A reel is the first dance form learned by beginners as it is easier and more basic. The Treble Jig is most likely the first hard shoe dance your dancer will learn.

BIll said I forgot this: Treble jigs are called " double jigs" as well; they use the same music as light jigs, just slowed down.
