What is the difference between euclid and keter

AKs and cars aren't exactly on the same level as a nuke. Fortunately, there isn't that much of a discrepancy between the two pages, so we just need to tweak the articles a bit. Both pages just say "unpredictable and not understood" for Euclid. Easy enough. I would just suggest a change on the SCP Object Classes page, because it says "does not obey known laws of nature and physics" to describe Euclid, when that line better describes every SCP, ever.

Perhaps the biggest problem with Keter is that both pages say that the Foundation is trying to destroy them and will do so if it can. Meanwhile, we tell the newbies not to make SCPs indestructible.

So…how would they write a destructible Keter, then, if the first thing that pops to mind is "Wait, why don't we just chuck this thing in a fire? Most of the Keter pages fulfill neither of those criteria, yet they remain around. Yes, I know, each article is a snapshot in time, but it seems unlikely that this site documents dozens of Keter objects in between the brief timeframe from "this thing is Keter" to "Ok, we can destroy it, let's do so.

That needs changing. There are three options available to us. We can tell everybody that Keters either have to cooperate, they have to be indestructible, or they have to be like and will kill everybody if it dies.

We can claim that the documentation is a snapshot and that the actual artifact has already been destroyed. Or we can just change the definition. I propose the third option. The rest of the Keter definition is generally clear. It'll kill us all if it breaks containment, and containment is challenging to maintain. Finally, the existence of two different definition pages is…puzzling.

Shouldn't we just have one definition? Of course, "there is no canon," but it seems wise to at least make sure we have consistent definitions.

To parrot something said by Quik, we need to consider both the difficulty of keeping something contained, and the danger of it once it gets loose. Now, though this might seem at first to need a two-dimensional classification system, three classes still works fine.

If you assign the numbers 1, 2, and 3 to difficulty of containment and danger outside containment, stuff starts making sense. If something is a 1 on the containment difficulty scale, that means that there's a very low risk of it breaking containment.

Thus, how dangerous it is outside containment doesn't matter, because that'll never happen. That's Safe. If something behaves in an unpredictable manner, it's harder to contain- maybe a 2 or 3.

Euclids are 2s and 3s on the containment difficulty scale that have a impact when outside containment—unpredictable, with a chance of breaking out, but not causing much real-world damage. Keter are the objects on the very highest tier- objects that are on the level of containment difficulty and have a 3-level real-world impact.

They are unpredictable, we need to keep containment on them as tight as possible, and if we fuck up, people will start dying. Note that this entire system is predicated on the belief that we need to consider danger outside of containment as well. If we only want to consider containment difficulty, yoric's proposal would work just dandy.

I'm…not entirely certain if we should also include outside-containment danger in the scale as well. I'm inclined to believe that most of the senior staff disagree with me, especially considering yoric's solely-containemnt difficulty based system. Uh, not saying that I'm proposing that we actually use the numbers 1, 2, and 3. Just a basis by which we might redefine the terms. A better approach would be to base the classes on danger posed even with observation of the best containment procedures possible.

Personally, I never thought of the classes as being a one-dimensional grey-scale of white, grey, and black. I thought of it as more of a blue, yellow, and red affair. In any case, see below for tl;dr. You know enough about them to control them with relative ease. They may pose any sort of threat under any sort of circumstance - the Foundation doesn't know yet and perhaps never will. Their threats may be largely but are seldom completely mitigated by dutiful observance of their containment procedures and may pose a threat even while contained to the best of the Foundation's ability.

This is a necessary caveat or else SCP is technically contained only while under direct observation, to give an example.

They may or may not be well understood, but if they are, such understanding does not make them easy to control. Easier, perhaps, but not easy. To summarize: Euclids are the default. If an object is found to be easy to control, its threats mitigated or found to be minimal, then it may be downgraded to Safe-class.

If a Euclid won't stop wrecking shit no matter what you do, it's upgraded to Keter. Furthermore, I think it counterproductive to set Keter apart any further from the other classes or change the scale to be based on something other than the danger posed by an object while contained to the best of the Foundation's ability. You see Safe-class, you instantly know you're fine if you don't fuck with it.
