Under the bonnet, the engine looks slightly different. There are four injectors which supply an extra liquid Valvecare and gas into the engine, as well as a few wires and an electronic box put neatly to one side of the engine. Inside the car the only sign is a control panel mounted on the dash which allows you to control the system and shows which fuel you are using and how much gas is in the tank.

If you got into our car and started driving it, you wouldn't know you were driving a gas-powered car. The car always starts from cold on petrol. After you have been driving a mile or so, and the engine reaches around 45C, the car automatically, and seamlessly, switches to gas. The only sign is the lights changing on the control panel.

In every other respect the car drives exactly as it would on petrol. If you run out of gas, the car automatically switches back to petrol, and, again, you wouldn't know it had happened except the system alerts you with a short buzz. Because you drive a little way at the start of each journey on petrol, you will need to put a few pounds worth of petrol in the car each month.

You can run the car on petrol by pushing the button on the control panel. Before the car was converted, it was achieving around 38 miles per gallon — depending on the journey type. The biggest disparity is on fast motorway runs. The key to making LPG work for you is to find a cheap local source. Petrol in our area is Yet some independent sites sell it for just 68p, while in Luxembourg this summer we paid just 53p.

The UK average is around 75p. Despite the perception that LPG is hard to find, we've had no problem filling up over the past few months, apart from in rural Wales. LPG is on sale at 1, sites in the UK — around half of them are traditional petrol stations. Running on gas does require a bit of planning. You have to think about where you are going to fill up before you travel, and build a refill into your route, but it's easy.

There's also an app for smartphone users that will direct you to the nearest supplier, and satnavs that highlight stations selling it. If you can't find gas on your route, you can, of course, run on petrol as normal, although paying p a litre again comes as rather a shock. I need to get a 7 seater and obviously that will mean increased fuel costs. I just asked mr madz if he thought it would be a good idea to get one converted to LPG and he said no.

The only reason he could give me though was that other people aren't rushing to do it. So, is converting to LPG a good idea or is it more trouble than it's worth? At the risk of doing a pogofish, there is a thread about this somewhere. I think that the costs of conversion outweigh the savings.

And there's the issue of not being able to find it very easily. GFuck knows what that'll be in an mpv. I really noticed the difference when I had a diesel car - much cheaper to run. I have a diesel already. It used to be much cheaper to get it converted in Belgium; It will end up like diesel - if enough people do it they will put the price up. Your fuel filters will be pink, if you ever have to use red in an emergency you have to replace all of your filters or they can tell even months later. They are more likely to check if you live in a rural area or get pulled in one.

If you get caught they take your motor right there and crush it. Any truck stops near you? A lot of Polish and Latvian lorry drivers will happily syphon their tanks for you. If you want red diesel, you can get it from any boatyard. Canals and rivers, they're all over the place. But that's definitely not worth it - I know now why no one ever even mentions it in jest!

I even know someone that lent their van to someone who then went and put in red and they didn't know it. They failed a check and vehicle got crushed. Ok they impound it right away, but it always ends up getting crushed, as even not knowing that it has had red put in by someone else is not enough of a reason to be let off.

Also never had such a problem in more then 5 years of owning them, parked in every garage without an issue, including the US Department of Homeland security building and Thai Immigration on Cheang Whattana if you do decide not to do it this is no reason not to, it's a complete overstatement to the real facts and makes me wonder just how many, or whether they actually owned any LP cars?.
